At this time Creative Salmon's
products are not Certified Organic.
CS Naturally Raised 11-01-05.pdf
Creative Salmon is one of the founding members of the
Pacific
Organic Seafood Association (POSA). At this time our standards are under
review by the Certified Organic Associations of British Columbia (COABC). Creative Salmon's goal is to achieve organic
certification as a producer member of the Pacific Organic Seafood
Association, when POSA becomes accredited as a Certification Body.
About
the
PACIFIC ORGANIC SEAFOOD
ASSOCIATION:
Pacific Organic Seafood Association (POSA) members raise salmon in a
healthy, safe and environmentally friendly way. The standards used by POSA
members meet or exceed standards that have been set by the International
Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). The standards that
have been set for POSA members are based on a review of standards that
have been accepted by 14 global organic standard setting organizations for
the organic rearing of aquatic species. In addition to these global
standards POSA members have additional standards, which address local
social and ecological issues. For example:
-
Feed
Ingredients
The
diets are made with fishmeals and organic grains. Feedstuff from wild
resources must be from wild resources, which are harvested according to
the "Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries" (FAO, 1995). A farmed
salmon uses less wild fish in their feed than a wild salmon would eat
naturally. Feeds are produced using by-products from fish used for human
consumption. This is the best use of this material because; by using
this material the biological capital inherent in this material (high
grade amino acids and long chain omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids) is
conserved for use in human nutrition.

-
High levels of Omega 3 and Omega 6
fatty acids
By
using a diet based on fish meal and fish oil our salmon is rich in Omega 3
and Omega 6 fatty acids. These are the good fats that help prevent heart
attacks.
-
Grown in a pristine environment
Farms are located in the pristine waters of coastal BC. Salmon need a
healthy environment to grow in. That is why salmon farms are located in
cool, clean coastal waters.
-
Fish welfare
The Five Freedoms are met: freedom from
malnutrition, freedom from injury and disease, freedom from fear and
distress, freedom from unnecessary restriction on behavior, freedom from
thermal and physical discomfort. Fish are raised at a low density in large,
expansive enclosures.
-
Sustainable farming practices
Generate economic benefits while having respect for our employees, the
community, the environment and the fish that we grow.
-
Only indigenous species are raised
POSA standards require that only
indigenous species be grown.
- Environmental monitoring
There is continuous monitoring of the
environment around salmon farms to ensure that there are minimal
environmental impacts. Impacts are temporal and reversible and we fallow
farms to ensure that impacts are minimal.
