Creative Salmon operates in the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations.  Over the years we have developed a working relationship based on neighborly respect and understanding.  Our relationship is the subject of a joint initiative between Creative Salmon and TFN to develop a formal Working Protocol agreement.  Discussions are ongoing and are a sincere attempt by both parties to develop a clear understanding of how we can work together as neighbors.  We were the first salmon farming company in British Columbia to employ an Aboriginal Liaison Representative, for assistance with the ongoing development of our relationship.

Statement from Tla-o-qui-aht:
“As Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations does not have a full understanding of how Salmon Farms operate within their territory, it would be inappropriate to have opposition to something that we do not know about. Therefore, we have taken the initiative to work with the industry to get better educated and by taking this approach it gives us plenty of opportunity to address and work on our concerns cooperatively with the Creative Salmon Company.  As we see that the industry has been around Clayoquot Sound for several years we see the economic opportunities and take advantage of them as it is beneficial for increased employment in our communities.  Most importantly, our concerns are met with honesty and trust between the industry and Tla-o-qui-aht.”

Creative Salmon is a member of the Clayoquot Sea Lice Monitoring Working Group.  This group was formed in 2003 and is made up of representatives from two local first nations; Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations and Ahousaht First Nations, as well as two salmon farming companies; Creative Salmon and Mainstream Canada.  The purpose of the group is continued monitoring of sea lice levels on wild salmon in Clayoquot Sound.
