Update
– Natural Pigments -- Creative Salmon’s fourth feed trial using
“natural pigments” is showing very positive results. The company
has been using a natural carotenoid pigment extracted from yeast,
called Phaffia and for the first time has seen excellent results.
From January to July 2006 approximately half of the fish destined
for market will have been fed natural pigments. If all goes well,
by September 2006 all production will be raised on natural pigment
diets.

Legal Action - Creative
Salmon commences legal action against the Friends of Clayoquot
Sound’s (FOCS) anti-aquaculture activist Don Staniford. Mr.
Staniford issued two Press Releases through the FOCS that in
Creative Salmon’s opinion contained defamatory statements.
A Writ of Summons was issued on July 6, 2005. Both parties have
made a Demand for Discovery of Documents. A date for the
Examination for Discovery is yet to be determined. A trial date
has been set for June 2006 in the Supreme Court of BC, in
Vancouver.

Update Malachite Green -- Creative
Salmon was given the green light from the CFIA to resume
harvesting.
CFIA
Green Light 7-14-05.pdf
Malachite Green has many applications in the manufacturing
industry. It is used as a textile dye and as a microbiological
testing agent. Malachite Green is also listed as a pulp mill
effluent on the Environment Canada website. Malachite Green has
recently been detected in sport-caught salmon and other fish
species.
Creative Salmon continues to work with the CFIA to determine the
source of the one positive sample. However, since Creative Salmon
has NEVER USED Malachite Green, and since there is no heavy
industrial activity in Clayoquot Sound, it appears to us that the
single positive test result was some sort of error.
Bi-annual laboratory testing for the presence of Malachite Green
in harvest fish, hatchery smolts and salmon feed is now standard
procedure at Creative Salmon.

Malachite Green -- Creative
Salmon received notification from the Canadian Food Inspection
Agency (CFIA) that a single fish taken from the Lions Gate
processing plant in Tofino BC on May 2, 2005 had allegedly tested
positive for the compound Malachite Green.
Creative Salmon voluntarily suspended harvesting and sales pending
further investigation.
Malachite Green 6-22-05.pdf
Creative Salmon has NEVER USED Malachite Green and immediately
sent off further samples of harvest size fish to an independent
laboratory at Guelph, Ontario. All the sample results came back
negative.
Malachite Green 6-29-05.pdf
In cooperation with a customer, Creative Salmon was able to locate
frozen salmon being held in cold storage, which originated from
the May 2, 2005 processing day. A sample of these fish was tested
for Malachite Green. All test results were negative.
Creative Salmon also sent fish (smolts) from our contracted
hatchery and samples of salmon feed to an independent laboratory
for analysis. Again, all results came back negative.
